According to personal aesthetic preference or composting needs, the construction of traditional wood or wire composting bin is relatively simple. Suppose you prefer to build your own business depending on the garden center, plant nursery, big-box stores, and online retail. In that case, you will need to wholesale the best compost bins from one or more reputable supplier(s) at unbeatable prices.
Main Types of Composting

Compost bins come in many shapes, sizes and are made of different materials. First, you have to consider what conditions and tasks your composters can be suitable for.
Active or Passive?
Almost all composting methods require the same four components: air, water, green materials with high nitrogen content (such as kitchen waste, green garden waste and fertilizer) and brown materials with high carbon content (such as autumn leaves, wood chips and sawdust). Different methods use these four same components to make finished compost. While some systems may be capable of active or passive composting, others may be designed for one method or another.
- Active composting: It can also be referred to as “hot composting” and requires “rotating” or mixing ingredients. Under the right conditions, active composting will raise the temperature of the composter to more than 135 degrees Fahrenheit, which is too hot for many garden pests and plant diseases. If the specification of the compost bucket says “easy to rotate”, it means that it is designed for active composting.
- Passive composting: Many compost barrels use passive composting, called “cold composting,” adding fresh raw materials to the top and then harvesting the finished compost from the hatch at the bottom. If these systems have sufficient ventilation from the side of the composter, there is no need to turn. Some larger buckets may have an aeration tube through the center.
Aerobic, Anaerobic, or Vermicomposting?
Households, farms, restaurants, schools, offices and commercial places produce compostable materials. For example, food residues, grass scraps, leaves, animal manure and coffee grounds are compostable. Compost can help make cheap fertilizer for lawns, gardens and farms.
Aerobic composting: Through aerobic composting, air is introduced to help quickly decompose materials. Compost needs turning every few days; this is where the compost tumbler can save plenty of time and energy. While rotating with high nitrogen content, the composting temperature will become higher, thus speeding up the process. If not keeping the tumbler moist and turning, the smell of aerobic compost will be nasty.
Anaerobic composting: You can tell by looking at the word anaerobic is the opposite of aerobic. The anaerobic method is almost effortless and convenient for composting but requires a year or more to get finished compost. Without oxygen, some annoying bacteria will take over. This happens in landfills, producing so much methane that they can actually explode, let alone harm the environment.
Vermicomposting: Vermicompost uses worms, oxygen and water to decompose almost odorless organic materials safely. Worms do most of the heavy work, and bacteria also help. Earthworm composting is superior to the other two methods for the following reasons:
- Little odor (it should smell “Earth”)
- Very few (if any) dangerous anaerobes and methane
- No need to “turn” frequently
- It can be carried out indoors or outdoors
- Easy to harvest fertilizer, especially using tray composter
What Material?
Compost buckets are usually made of ceramic, plastic or stainless steel. Some have washable plastic liners.
Plastic compost buckets are light and durable and can last for a long time. However, bacteria will take root and sprout if treated improperly, especially when stored at room temperature. So it’s necessary to recycle and replace the plastic compost bin when the smell gets out of control.
The ceramic bucket is specially marked as a “compost bucket” will be designed to resist odors. Pay attention to air holes. Random unfinished rough pottery may give off a peculiar smell.
Stainless steel compost bin is easy to wash between compost pile with air holes on the cover.
What is the best compost bin?
Odor is a topic of conversation regarding piling up organic waste in the indoor compost bin. Because uncovered debris may attract other unwanted insects, stationary compost bins need a replacement for a larger outdoor composter. Under such a situation, it’s too inefficient for most households. When retailing compost bins and containers, you can pay attention to the following aspects.
The best compost barrels are:
- Made of durable materials that are easy to wash or clean
- The material is not easy to produce an unpleasant smell
- Allow airflow
- Resistant to insect invasion
- Small footprint, or can be hung on cabinets or walls
- Easy to handle
